The IRIS (Individualized Reading Instructional System) is a comprehensive developmental reading system for older youth and adults. Using phonics, sight/sound relationship, and reading/writing approaches to reading instruction, the IRIS includes materials from five publishers.

Students take a Placement Test the results of which determine their functional reading level and place them in the appropriate instructional track:

Track I (0.0 - 1.9 grade level): Reading Readiness

Teaches right-to-left reading progression; eye/hand coordination; pronouncing letters; recognizing and writing upper and lower case letters; recognizing sound/symbol relationships; and decoding skills.

 

Track II (2.0 - 2.9 grade level): Vocabulary Expansion

Teaches mastery of the English language sound system; decoding of one-syllable words; capitalizing and punctuation simple sentences; comprehending the content of short passages; answering questions regarding passage details.

 

Track III (3.0 - 3.9 grade level): Reading Longer Passages

Teaches alphabetizing; identifying the main idea; recognizing supporting details; making inferences; writing sentences; and comprehension and retention skills.


Track IV (4.0 - 4.9 grade level): Inferential Reading Skills

Teaches reading words in context; using diacritical marks in word pronunciation; locating words and definitions in the dictionary; using a book's table of contents and index.
